All publicly published content hosted on Figshare can be downloaded by anyone, with no need to log in. The content can be bulk- downloaded or mined using the Figshare API, depending on the licenses the author published the content under. Figshare accepts any file type and aims to make them all previewable in the browser. This allows users to preview and interact with the content even if they do not have the proprietary software required.
As we convert a lot of files in order to preview them, we are planning to allow data consumers to download the files in original formats as well as any open formats where possible. This functionality will be available through the Figshare interface and the API, in Q4 2018.
